Maddie: Class of 2018

MN weather has been something else this summer. Maddie and I had to cancel her shoot not once but twice because of rain. The worst part? Both days it frustratingly went from stormy to sunny, but only after it was too late to shoot! BUT... I'm not complaining, because our third try was successful, and it was absolutely gorgeous out! Also, we had a fun shoot because her adorable puppy, mom, sister, and friend came along for the ride. :)

Maddie is the perfect mix of sophisticated, classy, genuine, and fun. Super stunning and easygoing! She killed it with her outfit choices: a classy, timeless white top, a teal dress that brought out her beautiful hazel eyes, and a bold red shirt that complemented her brown hair nicely. Also, coming from a family tree of lots of dentists, you have a million dollar smile.

Maddie, thank you so much again for your flexibility and good attitude about all the rain and rescheduling hoops we had to jump through in order to finally get the perfect senior photo evening! Honestly, I would go through all that weather frustration again though for this shoot because I love the floral theme that you requested, the perfect summer weather we had when we finally got to shoot, and all the pictures we took. Also, it was fun to take a walk down memory lane and take pictures where I had my own senior photos taken 3 summers ago. Anyway, I had so much fun spending the evening with you and your squad! I wish you a phenomenal senior year!

Haley + Drew: Engaged (Destination Engagement Photos)

Flying out to Nevada to take engagement photos for Haley and Drew is definitely the highlight of my summer and maybe even my life, who knows. I remember being on the plane and not really knowing what to expect at all, since I hadn’t met either of them yet. But, it’s new, exciting experiences like these that I am most passionate about and motivated by.

Before I get into my personal reflection and delve into explaining how much this trip meant to me, here’s a recap of our weekend! On Friday I woke up at 3:45am but waking up wasn’t even hard since I was so excited! I met Emma, Haley’s sister, at the airport and we quickly bonded over our love for light roast coffee and our interest in illuminati conspiracy theories. We arrived in Reno at about 9:30am on Friday and Drew picked us up and we got brunch at a local cafe. Then we picked up Haley, and I knew right away she was super awesome and sweet and that I would have so much fun photographing her and Drew! That afternoon, we packed up the car, stopped for some coffee, and hit the road for Lake Tahoe. As we awaited the golden hour, we explored the town a little bit and ventured across the state border into California. This was a mini dream come true for me since I’ve always wanted to go to California. It was awesome. Unnecessary side note: I ate a life-changing chocolate raspberry crepe there. California, you treated this MN girl well, even if it was only for a half hour.

Then we went to the lake itself and started taking pictures. Tahoe is unimaginably breathtaking — turquoise, sparkling water, all enclosed by majestic mountains and pines. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves! One of my favorite moments from the shoot was after Haley and Drew had been holding each other. As I looked at the photos, Haley had the most content, joyful expression. I asked what she and Drew had been talking about, expecting the answer to be something gushy and beautiful and emotional. Instead I learned that Drew had been talking to her about the pizza that we were going to eat after the shoot. #couplegoals.

That night we went to an Italian restaurant and went to bed early since Emma and I had been up for almost 21 hours at that point. We woke up at 5am on Saturday morning and drove to a meadow in the mountains for engagement photos round two. It was honestly perfect — sweeping meadows with wildflowers, gorgeous mountains, and beautiful sunrise lighting. The perfect backdrop for timeless, classic engagement photos. After taking pictures we had some celebratory champagne and some hikers were pretty confused as to why we were holding champagne bottles at that hour, but once they learned about the engagement photos, they were congratulating :) After we finished the second session, we drove back through the mountains and got some amazingly gratifying breakfast food at a local diner. That concluded the photo taking, but for the rest of the day we explored Reno, visited Drew’s alma mater, did some sightseeing at some of the casinos, shopped, stopped at The Hub (an adorable local coffee shop), and hopped around to a few of Haley and Drew’s favorite local bars.

From being on the plane and not really knowing what to expect since I hadn’t met either of you yet, to running around in meadows at sunrise, to eating crepes in California and taking in every moment, this trip was absolutely unreal and I am so thankful for it. I had so much fun editing the photos because I got to relive all the fun memories!

Time for some personal reflection. You know when you have an experience that is so deeply impactful and inspiring to you that it leaves you high on life for a long time after? This was this destination engagement shoot to me. In my head I keep reliving the moments of the trip where my soul actually felt on fire. Many times during the trip to Lake Tahoe, I thought to myself, “This is what it feels like to be truly alive.” And, fully alive I was: surrounded by people who quickly went from strangers to close friends, in one of the most geographically beautiful places in the U.S., and two whole days to adventure and do what I love: create moments and photograph people. There was something profoundly magical about photographing two people who are deeply in love. It brings the emotional significance of photography to a whole new level. It served as a reminder to me that photographing people means so much more than snapping a photo and making someone look natural and beautiful. So, so much more.

From the moment I became connected with Haley and Drew a few months ago, it all felt slightly surreal. It was hard to believe that two people, let alone strangers, believed in my work so much they wanted to invest in flying me out to take their engagement photos in Nevada. To date this is the most incredible photography experience I’ve ever had, and as I reflect, I feel an immense sense of gratitude. This trip made all the times I haven’t believed in myself, or have gotten so frustrated with photography that I’ve wanted to throw my camera or my computer away, or quit altogether, beyond worth it. I’d experience these times all over again a thousand times for this adventure with Haley and Drew.

Haley and Drew, thank you so much for all that you have given me and for this incredible opportunity. I don’t think I will ever be able to thank you enough! I had the best time with you two and Emma :)

Julia: Class of 2018

Julia: you are absolutely darling and I had so much fun working with you! You are a natural beauty and honestly resemble an angel - glowing complexion, gorgeous smile, and pretty hazel eyes. You are remarkably beautiful and made photographing you beyond easy and so much fun. In fact, I was so excited with how the photos were turning out that I turned down sleeping on my 6am flight the next morning to edit :)

Also, Hannah, you win sister of the year award for helping Julia pick out some amazing outfits from your own closet! Nicest sister ever!! Still cannot get over the white floral romper from Zara in Spain. It was perfectly summery and the colors in it matched several walls that we found!

I was super happy when Julia chose St. Anthony Main as her location because it's one of my all-time favorite photography spots with its variety of rich colors and backgrounds. Out of all the shoots I've had, this was definitely the most adventurous. As a brief recap, we climbed down the sketchy stairway by the Stone Arch Bridge to the Mississippi River, got access to an amazing rooftop overlooking the river and the Minneapolis skyline, encountered some very strange people, and even accidentally photobombed an indoor wedding reception that I didn't realize was happening until I looked in the windows. Major oops, but we still got cute photos!

Julia, thanks so much for your enthusiasm throughout the shoot and willingness to try various poses. I'm also still happy that we both share a mutual love for candid photos. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and have an amazing senior year!!

"She is clothed in strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future." -Proverbs 31:25

Andrew: Class of 2018

For those who may not know... Andrew is my little brother :) He and I are pretty different in the sense that I looked forward to getting my senior pictures taken for the entirety of high school while he was absolutely dreading it. "Can't we just take one photo in the backyard?" "Do I have to?" Even though I know being photographed isn't Andrew's favorite thing in the world, this was definitely my most special shoot I've ever had. By far. Even though taking the actual pictures was slightly like pulling teeth, Andrew was a great sport and we had a good time! I've realized this is probably the only time I'm going to have him in front of my camera for a decent amount of time, so this shoot truly meant a lot to me.

I've shed a few tears as I've edited these photos because it's almost impossible to comprehend that my not-so-baby brother is already embarking on his final year of high school. Just yesterday, I would pass him in the hall when he was just a little freshman and I was a senior. He always brightened my day with his smile! We would drive to school every day that year, and it was always fun starting off the morning with him, even though I made him late just about every day. (Sorry bro!) Even though we were only in the same school for one short year, I cherish that year deeply.

Andrew has the warmest, deepest, most inviting brown eyes I've ever seen. He also has one of the biggest hearts. He's touched many lives with how much he cares. Also: don't be fooled by his quiet presence - he has the biggest sense of humor out of anyone I know. He's clever, witty, and can make me laugh at any given time!

Story time. When we were much younger, my stubborn, independent 5-year-old self got mad at my parents and declared that I was "running away". After my parents responded by asking if I needed a map, I actually walked out the front door and up the street. Andrew was about 3 at the time and started crying hysterically, chasing after me, saying "Who am I going play with?" This memory is precious to me. We were great playmates and friends growing up, and we got along extremely well. I'm blessed to have him as my brother!

Allie: Individual Portraits

It's always so nice to work with someone for a second time!! I first photographed Allie back in March and we had a great time running around Minneapolis. One of my favorite parts about photography is meeting new people and making great new friends, like this wonderful human. So, when Allie reached out again for a summer session, I was overjoyed. She's one of those people who is so bubbly, cheerful, and humorous that whenever you're with her, you're guaranteed to be laughing the whole time. The candids of her laughing are honestly my favorite because I can hear her laugh and remember how much fun we were having!!

The focus of our shoot was definitely color. We found a variety of colorful walls and backgrounds and had a hay day with them. Recently I've been obsessed with two things in my photography: color and candids. Allie was great for both because A) she's always laughing, and B) she does all the things I tell her to without hesitation -- "Hey Allie! Quick go dance in front of that cool brick wall!" or, "Smile at that lamppost!" Oh, and we also randomly decided to take some through-the-window coffee pictures at one of my favorite coffee spots just for fun. I've seen pictures like that all over Pinterest, tumblr, and Instagram and it had been on my bucket list for a while to try it myself.

I love the energy, confidence, and happiness that Allie consistently shows when she is photographed. You're a magnificent, glowing person. My mom was looking over at my shoulder when I was editing and she said that Allie should be a model! I totally agree.

Thanks again Allie!! Cannot wait for our next adventurous shoot :)

Emily's Story: Fitness, Eating Disorder Recovery, and Becoming Your Best Self

Behind the inspirational fitness Instagram account @leanfitfast is Emily: a 21-year-old Notre Dame student, fitness/health guru, and Boston Marathon-qualified runner. Through her daily workout logs, meal prep tutorials, and tips and tricks for navigating life balance and positive body image, Instagram has become the platform for Emily to broadcast her fitness journey with others.

She offers endless positivity, exercise advice, and motivation to her followers multiple times each day as she tries new workouts. However, the place she is in now has not come easily.

"When I look back on what happened to me, I see a broken image of what being healthy and fit means. I once believed it meant something so different. Now, I thank God every day for the ability to have a clearer view of what’s really looking back at me in the mirror."

Partway through college, Emily developed an eating disorder that shook her D1 collegiate running career and caused her to reconsider her relationship with fitness, food, and herself. Instead of viewing these events as losses, she used them as the starting point for reinventing herself, rediscovering fitness, and helping others on Instagram along the way.

Below is Emily's story.

“Health and fitness were not always exciting for me. They once confused me, stressed me, worried me and derailed me.

When I first came into college as a Division 1 track athlete, I was completely unaware of my body image. I never stopped for a minute to reflect on the way my body looked. I was content and confident.

It wasn’t long until I noticed how different my body looked from the other track athletes around me. I weighed more and this began to bother me. In fact, I obsessed over it.

I began a cycle of fasting, skipping meals for 30 hour periods; the other times included minimal eating. The exact reasoning is hard to remember; I know I wanted to be smaller, thinner, tinier, leaner.

My body suddenly became all I thought about. I looked at it morning, midday, afternoon and night. I constantly compared myself to others and I was relentless in my mission to become skinny.

When I’d crawl into bed many nights, I’d curl into a ball to try and suppress the painful hunger that seared through my stomach.

I was constantly hungry. I was in pain.

Hunger and pain didn’t stop me from working out. I pushed myself through 2.5+ hours of cardio each day, even when my body was physically exhausted.

I lost fifteen pounds within a month. Losing this weight also caused me to lose muscle and strength. Weakness conquered my running ability.

Soon enough, I was injured with a stress fracture which eventually led to a herniated back. I was unable to perform, I felt like a failure.

Eating was stressful. Eating produced anxiety within me. I skipped meals, outings, events, parties…I was unhappy.

All I knew was that as long as I was thin, I had control. As long as I was thin, I hadn’t completely failed myself.

Push comes to shove: I passed out in the Notre Dame library.

I summoned the courage to call my mom. I realized that something in my life needed to change. This pressure and this evil needed to escape me.

For quite some time, I denied it was an issue. I denied I needed help. I denied that what was happening to me was abnormal. Surely, everyone struggles like this -- something I convinced myself was true.

But it took a harsh moment of reality and pain for me to see what I had done to myself. I was injured, weak and now I couldn’t even stay conscious.

I decided that the best decision was for me to quit track. Collegiate running was not providing me the joy I sought in physical activity and competition.

This decision changed my life.

I was able to channel my past pain into a new, positive environment of self-love and care. I began exercising for fun, comparing my body to nobody’s but my own. I pushed myself to be the best and healthiest version of myself, whatever that meant for me. I no longer felt a need to fit any mold or meet any requirement. Through this, I found a comfortable place where I was able to begin treating my body the way it deserved -- not without the assistance and guidance from those I love and care for.

Health and fitness do not need to be chores. They do not need to be painful. They definitely do not need to be toxic. Health and fitness should serve as mediums of living a more fruitful and full life.

Fitness, for me, has been molded by my past and continual love of athletics. I have been an athlete my entire life. As I get older, this has developed into a passion for physical activity and movement. I challenge myself because I enjoy the pleasure it provides me!

Our bodies are so capable. We can do so much with them. It is my mission to live a life where I can enjoy this body through exercise and activity, aided by a healthy diet and obviously balance. No life can be full without understanding when to hit the brakes, enjoy a treat, relax and rest. No life can be full when fitness and health takes control over your own existence. Health and fitness are pieces in a puzzle that is you, they are not the dictators.

I chose to love myself first. Then I chose to love fitness and health. My passion for these elements has only grown over the years. I’ve learned, read, spoken to experts, taken advice, made mistakes…but I’ve enjoyed the entire experience.

When I look back on what happened to me, I see a broken image of what being healthy and fit means. I once believed it meant something so different. Now, I thank God every day for the ability to have a clearer view of what’s really looking back at me in the mirror.

I still struggle. I still battle this demon. I’m flawed, imperfect and I doubt myself. Some days are worse than others. But I know now that with faith, persistence and self-love I am capable of anything. I choose not to fear food, but to let food fuel me.

“I do not run so that I can eat, I eat so that I can run”

Take control of your life. Discover what it is you want. Ask for help. Be brave and never, ever give up.

Today, I focus my fitness on activities that I enjoy. I run, I use cardio machines, I lift, I do yoga. I find workouts that I love/can continue to love and I stick with them. I recommend finding an area of activity you thrive in, something you are passionate about. Find something…that literally fills a space in your life. Make sure you dedicate time to health and fitness. Your body is a temple. Treat it well and care for it. That also means understanding when to rest it! Push yourself, challenge yourself. There is nothing more rewarding than accomplishing something great.

Good luck and remember: health and fitness is a journey that varies for every single person. Don’t compare yourself to others. The only person you’re competing with is YOU! Go chase your dreams. You may just be surprised at what you can do.”

Melissa: Class of 2018

No better way to start off a week than with an energetic, fun senior session with a great, outgoing senior, bright and early on a sunny Monday morning!! Melissa, you are absolutely darling and I had so much fun meeting with you, photographing you, and talking about life! You were so comfortable and confident in front of the camera and you made my job easy. Couldn't have asked for a more photogenic and easygoing person to photograph -- it was no surprise to me that you have modeling experience. As I edited the photos after, I realized that this was probably my favorite senior shoot that I have had yet. Some of these photos definitely are some of my all-time favorite pictures that I've captured in the years that I've been into photography!

To summarize the shoot, we started off the session bright and early at 7:30 am with field photos, a.k.a. one of my favorite types of senior pictures. You definitely killed it with the outfits you chose! Also, fending off the horseflies and mosquitoes for 30 minutes was completely worth it because the morning sunshine in that field was beautiful. I love these pictures and how they turned out, so I'd deal with the bugs all over again ten times if I had to! (For real though I literally had to photoshop out horseflies that decided to photo bomb us.) As I edited these photos afterwards I kept thinking how you should model for Anthropologie or Free People! You are such a natural.

I also love the photos we captured by the water because they complement your pretty blue eyes!! You were also such a sport and had no problem crouching in sand, laying down on the boardwalk, or laughing at stupid things I said to get candid laughing pictures :)

One thing that I kept thinking as we chatted throughout the shoot is how much you remind me of my senior self (except you're way less awkward and weird as I was LOL). Although I know you're super excited to experience life post-graduation, make the most of your senior year because it sure flies by fast! Enjoy every moment and know that there's nothing but opportunity in your future. I wish you the absolute best with everything, and I'm excited to see where you decide to go next year :) Stay in touch!!

Thanks so much for letting me capture your senior photos. I hope you had as much fun as I did!!

Mustafa Fareed: Graduation Party

Congratulations on your successful high school career, Mustafa! Your family was referred to me through a mutual friend and I am so happy you were, because it was wonderful to meet and work with you and your family! Your graduation party was lovely. You had an abundance of family and friends from around the country who were there to celebrate your accomplishments and the day with you, and it was so much fun to photograph everyone. Also, I still cannot get over how photogenic everyone was! You have such a vibrant, energetic, and beautiful family. Thank you for letting me photograph the event :) I hope that these pictures can help you commemorate this time in your life!

Kelly & Tom: 6/24/17

If I could envision a perfect outdoor wedding out of a magazine, it would be exactly like Kelly and Tom's. The wedding took place in the picturesque back lawn of Tom's home along the Mississippi River in Anoka, Minnesota. All the small details added up to perfection: a sweeping lawn, stringed lights (my favorite), live music, and chairs set up so that the ceremony would overlook the river. I still cannot get over the weather that we experienced throughout the course of the evening. At the start of the ceremony, it was lightly sprinkling with a silvery grey sky. As the ceremony progressed and vows were exchanged, the delicate rainfall cleared up and the most celestial, golden beams of light emerged through the clouds! This turned into a pleasant June evening for the rest of the wedding!

The entire evening felt remarkably special, delightfully spontaneous, and altogether beautiful with sprinklings of happy tears and laughter throughout. It was easy to feel the excitement and support of Kelly and Tom's loved ones who came to celebrate the beginning of the bride and groom's future together! From when Kelly's mother and father walked her down the grassy aisle to when vows were exchanged to their champagne toast to their memorable first dance, the wedding could not have been more lovely. I feel incredibly blessed to have had the opportunity to make my debut into wedding photography with Kelly and Tom's wedding!

A recurring thought I reflected upon as I photographed the evening and edited the photos afterwards is that love has no timeline. There's no saying as to when in your lifetime you will meet someone who will change your life and bring refreshing new love and light into your days. Through their own vows and the speeches of their friends and family, it became clear to me that that described Kelly and Tom's story. They are meant to be and I wish them and their new family an abundant and happy new life together!

Andy: Class of 2018

Mr. Andy B. Where to begin?! This guy is an innovative mind and well beyond his years in just about every aspect! He's a fantastic student, son, brother, friend, athlete, public speaker, student senator, the list goes on. Let me shine the spotlight on him for a minute. Andy was an innovator and entrepreneur starting in the 7th grade. He came up with an actionable idea on how to maximize lawn care while providing personalized service, and then followed through with his plan. If you need landscaping or lawn care, Andy is your guy! In between snapping pictures, I got to nerd out and talk about marketing and business strategy (aka my major and one of my areas of interest) with him. Heck yeah! Oh, I might also add that ANDY, an incoming senior in high school, was giving ME, an incoming college junior, time management advice on how to manage a multitude of classes, sports, and extracurriculars. There's much to learn from this guy, no matter your age!

Andy's entrepreneurial spirit is only the beginning of all that makes him incredible. I've known him and his family for over a decade now and even several years ago I remember how he would strike up complex conversations about various topics with my parents. Politics, foreign policy, international affairs, social issues, you name it. It takes a special type of maturity to be well-versed in such issues at a young age. But, that's Andy for you. His insatiable curiosity and desire to stay informed will no doubt be advantageous as he ventures off to college and beyond!

(Even though Andy is mature beyond his years, he's also a chill, down-to-earth, humorous guy. Notably, we spent a considerable amount of time laughing about memes and funny tweets. My type of conversation.)

He's been a loyal, godly friend to my brother Andrew, and I know that my parents (and I!) are very thankful for their friendship. Andy, you've been a great role model throughout the years! One of my favorite memories with Andy, his family, and mine is when we went to Costa Rica to volunteer at an orphanage a couple years ago. As some of the few Spanish speakers on our trip, Andy and I were translators for the week!

Well, Andy, it was an honor to photograph you. Thanks for letting me take your senior photos! Even though we battled some intense heat, you killed your senior photo shoot. I had the most interesting time talking with you throughout the evening. You have so much going for you, and I hope you enjoy your senior year. This is going to sound corny, but never stop dreaming big. You're the type of person who can accomplish anything you set your mind to!

Lukas: Class of 2018

I've had the honor of knowing Lukas and his amazing family for many years now -- since Lukas and my younger brother were in 4th grade! At this time, his older sister Ariana became my best friend. In fact, fast forward a few years, and Lukas and I were even on the Orono Cross Country Running team when I was a senior and he was a freshman. (Side note: while he was running varsity with quite impressive times, I was on the team solely for the pasta carbo loads. No regrets.) Aside from his running ability, Lukas is a very talented wrestler and will embark on his 5th season on varsity wrestling this year!

Only talking about Lukas' impressive athleticism wouldn't do him justice. What is really the most impressive about Lukas is how mature, humble, and thoughtful he is. Even as a high schooler, he is interested in studying economics in his free time. I always remember seeing intricate concept maps on his family's kitchen, outlining certain economic principles and policies, all drawn by Lukas. He also has a knack for building up those around him. His mom says that one of the most admirable aspects of Lukas is that he encourages other young men his age to be comfortable in their own skin. It's safe to say that the world needs more courageous, kind-hearted gentlemen like Lukas.

Lukas, thank you so much for allowing me to take your senior photos. You're confident and handsome and I hope that these photos will help you commemorate your high school years! I quickly realized that you pull off the serious face quite well (even if it took getting some laughs out first!) and they make for some killer black and white edits. Congrats on your successes thus far, and best of luck with senior year!

Anna: Graduation Photos

Congratulations on graduating high school <3 I can't possibly imagine life without you as one of my best friends and favorite people ever. I am so excited for you as you embark on the next chapter of your life! It was an honor to take your graduation photos!

Nicki: Individual Portraits (Summer 2016)

Meet my incredible friend Nicki. She's a life changing friend to say the least. We bonded over our mutual appreciation for all things creative... and the fact that we both shoot with Nikons, and practically live off of cold brew coffee.  :-) Seriously though, Nicki is one-of-a-kind and inspires me to chase after my artistic passions which I am so thankful for.

Luckily for us, we met at college but our hometowns are close so we get to hang out during the summertime! That's what we did this day -- coffee and catch up at the Mocha Monkey, and then a super spontaneous portraiture shoot for her in downtown Waconia. These photos represent everything I love about Nicki: natural, pure, authentic, and fun. And she's also out-of-this-world beautiful. Love ya, soul sis!

Blake: Senior Portraits

I always love finding new places for photography shoots. I was excited when Blake and his mother chose Elm Creek Park Reserve as the location for his senior portraits -- I couldn't have asked for a better place. Or better clients. Blake, thanks for being such an easygoing guy throughout the session!  I loved hearing all about your passion for your car and I'm so happy you requested pictures with it. Those are some of my favorites that we took all evening! I hope you enjoy them for years to come. Have a great senior year!

Jack & Morgan: Couples Portraits

It was so much fun capturing pictures of Jack and Morgan. Such a fun and classy couple! Honestly, I felt like I was taking pictures for a bridal magazine because they were so photogenic and natural in front of the camera. Even when we were getting attacked by mosquitos constantly, they were the perfect models! We had the best golden hour twilight lighting paired with the beautiful Noerenberg Memorial Gardens. I couldn't be happier with how the photos turned out and I hope that they help to commemorate this time in Jack and Morgan's lives for years to come.

Anna: Senior Portraits

Anna has been one of my best friends for almost 10 years now. It seems like just yesterday we were playing with dolls and going to day camp together... and now I'm in college and she is about to embark on her final year of high school! Where does the time go?!?

It was an honor to take senior photos for one of my closest and most beautiful & confident friends. We had a great time listening to fun music, talking and laughing, and snapping photos at her beautiful home and then in Excelsior!

Anna's bold personality and beauty truly show in the photos and that is what I love so much about them.
